Our take on Bestow Life Insurance

Bestow began in 2017 as a startup aimed at “helping people protect their people.” While the business is based in Dallas, this online company works in all states, with the exception of New York. Bestow is technically an insurance agent, serving as a link between customers and North American Company for Life and Health Insurance, the insurance carrier.

Bestow specializes in term life insurance plans. These plans are valid for a specific period of time and are generally much cheaper than whole life insurance. These plans can be ideal for those who desire coverage while their children and other dependents are living in their household.

The company’s greatest selling point is their simple, clean, online interface. Life insurance typically requires a complete medical check-up, Bestow streamlines this process through a simple online application.
Applicants answer questions through Bestow’s website, and the company uses this data to calculate their insurance premiums. After providing data like age, weight, ZIP code, and a brief lifestyle survey, applicants can begin their term life insurance plans in a matter of minutes.

What we like

Quick Coverage and No Medical Exam

Bestow streamlines the process by eliminating the medical exam, which means that you can receive coverage in a matter of minutes.

Quotes and Coverage Right from Your Device

The clean, simple, mobile-friendly website is easy to use, and it saves you the trouble of meeting with an insurance agent.

30-Day Money-Back Guarantee

It’s customary for insurance providers to offer a 10-day introductory period, but Bestow goes the extra mile with a 30-day guarantee. Cancel at any time during this period and you’ll receive a full refund.

What we don’t like

Their pricing isn’t competitive

Bear in mind that Bestow only sells term life insurance. If customers need whole and universal policies, they will have to look elsewhere. Additionally, the coverage amounts are limited to the range of $50,000 to $1.5 million. Customers seeking greater coverage will have to look elsewhere.

No Insurance Riders Offered

Most insurance companies allow customers to add riders, which can be used to customize their policy. Bestow offers no such service.

Policies Limited by Age and Location

Bestow’s coverage is limited by age. Their 10-year policy is limited to customers between the ages of 21 to 55. Their 20-year policy is limited to a maximum age of 45—though this age is reduced to 43 if you are a man who uses tobacco.

Customers who are over 55 cannot apply. Additionally, their policies are not available to residents of New York state.

Bestow Life Insurance Products

4.0/5
Bestow offers simple, fast, reliable services, and their parent company has a superior rating from A.M. Best. For an online company, they are affordable, though not as affordable as those that offer medical exams. Bestow is not a good option for older customers or those who want more options than Bestow’s policies can provide.

20-Year Plan Requirements

This plan is for customers from ages 21 to 45. If you are a male smoker, the plan is limited to a maximum age of 43.

Those who have been diagnosed with cancer in the last 10 years will be denied.

Policy benefits

4.0/5
Term life insurance by Bestow is simple and straightforward. You don't get a lot of policy benefits. But instead, the application is straightforward and can be completed online.

Both the 10-year and 20-year plans can offer benefits in the range of $50,000 to $1.5 million dollars. Usually, a medical exam won’t be required either.

This is a good plan to consider if any of the following applies to you:

  • You are the primary breadwinner for your family.
  • You carry a lot of debt and losing income would be catastrophic.
  • You have dependents who rely on your income to live.
  • You are young and healthy, but want a low rate for the long term.

In short, term life insurance could be beneficial to those who want to protect their family for a specific period of time, like while children are living under their roof.

Cost

4.5/5
Bestow offers competitive rates for convenient term life insurance without a medical exam.

Lowest prices on instant-issue life insurance

Bestow isn’t the cheapest life insurance provider, as there are more affordable options that require a medical exam. But, it is among the cheapest for an instant issue, online-only life insurance policy.

10-year and 20-year term

Both the 10-year and 20-year plans start at $8.00 per month. However, you can expect that these rates will fluctuate considerably depending on how you answer the initial intake questions. Additionally, these rates will increase as you age, as well as if you are diagnosed with any medical issues.

Cost of 10-Year Policy

If you are a 35-year-old man and seeking a $250,000 policy, you can expect to pay around $12-13 per month. Women can expect to pay roughly $14 per month for the same policy.

These numbers can increase sharply with any medical or lifestyle issues you indicate on your initial questionnaire.

Cost of 20-Year Policy

If you are a 35-year-old man and seeking a $250,000 policy, you can expect to pay around $14-15 per month. Women can expect to pay roughly $16-17 per month for the same policy.

Again, many factors can cause these rates to fluctuate, with some policies rising to $20-40 per month.

Performance

4.5/5
While Bestow only has a few years under its belt, all of its policies are underwritten by parent company North American. North American in turn has excellent performance and financial ratings.

Financial ratings

Bestow’s customers ultimately receive insurance policies from North American. North American paid over $593 million in death benefit claims in 2019 alone, and their reliability is recognized with an A+ Superior rating from A.M. Best.

Customer reviews

4.7/5
While Bestow has not received enough reviews from verified True Blue customers, their average rating is 4.7 on Trustpilot.

Customer Ratings

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners calculates customer satisfaction using complaint ratios. These ratios measure the number of complaints a company receives relative to their size. In 2019, North American’s complaint ratio was 0.74, meaning that they received fewer complaints when compared to other companies of the same size.

Additionally, while Bestow operates through an online interface, customers can reach a representative either by phone or through the website’s live chat feature. Their member portal also allows customers to view and adjust their policy information, make payments, and submit claims.

Bestow’s term life insurance isn’t for everyone. But those who qualify can enjoy the immediacy of their online interface and the simplicity of their policy options.
